Project 6: Second Progress Review

  1. Hello Audrey!

Your project is coming along so nice. You did an awesome job at documenting your mothers cooking moments so naturally. Here are my critiques on each photo:

    1. Demonstrates the start of her cooking. I like the angle you chose to shoot above her looking down at the book. I also like the small shadows as well.

    2. I liked the concept of capturing the ingredients. I think you could have shot this with some more light to bring out the detail better.

    3. This is a lovely shot. I really like the lighting and contrast that this pictures shows.

    4. I really like how the picture is shown vertically too and has direction. You start with her eyes and it looks down onto the shredding board. This also could look cool if you moved closer to catch the detail of the zucchini being sliced.

    5. Great shot. Love how you caught the egg breaking in action.

    6. I love the serious facial expression while measuring out the oil. It really adds a dramatic feel to the shot. I think you could have had more lightning or raised your ISO to make things more clear.

    7. I like how you decided to turn the focus onto the measuring cup in this shot. I think if you were to move out further it would have been more interesting to see what she was pouring the cup into. Otherwise I would have moved closer and cut out the blender looking object at the bottom to have a better frame.

    8. Great lightning. I think if you were to change up the angle and shoot more by her hands it would create a better look.

    9. I really love how the steam comes off the pasta for more effects. The only thing I would change on this is to increase the brightness.

10 & 11. I think these two shots are very similar in angle and direction. For next time I would recommend putting the focus on a different subject like the knife or lettuce. You could also shoot one of these at top view angle to mix things up.

    12. I love the angle but its hards to tell what she is mixing. I think if you were to use a flash on this shot it could turn out really cool with reflection of the bowl. I also think there is too much space in the background that takes away the focus. Try centering the camera more so there is no un even space.

    13. I love the emotion on her face with the small smile. I think this adds a lot to the picture since we can all relate to that feeling when you finally finish preparing your meal. This angle is also very fascinating since its from inside the oven. The only recommendation I have is to next time try to capture her head further down so nothing is cut off. It will also create better focus on both her face and the what seems to be muffins.

Awesome job on these pictures :) Your project is heading in the right direction. You just have some little things to be fixed.

  2. Hey Audrey, commenting here to crit your photos:

I think you did a good job telling the story of making dinner here. Its very clear from start to finish. I think your project is really starting to come together. The only thing I may change (if your camera has the option) is to shoot in vivid color just to see how it looks. This may brighten up some of the reds and greens in your photos which is great for food.

My favorite photo of the set is photo 9 with the steam. The steam was captured very well and definitely tells the viewer that the pasta a super hot. The colors in this photo are all great as well, and your focal point and DOF really add to the photo.
